Final Evaluation

Final Evaluation

I believe that my 5 shoots have met my idea for relationships, between colour and food. My first two shoots which were influenced by Sarah Graham, clearly shows the relationship between colour and food and how it can make you feel. Sarah Graham says she does her work  because "Using subjects that allow me to satisfy my obsession with colour and within them somehow communicate that elusive sense of sheer joy". She says she uses colours in her work because she tries to show joy and happiness. Which I have tried and feel matched in my work relating to Sarah Graham. My editing of my best image from each shoot gives a strong colourful and vivacious image that is conveyed. This is down to making the main subject bold and colourful so it stands out. As well as blurring the background or keeping the background as one colour so your subject stands out and is the first thing someone sees when looking at the images.

My third shoot was influenced by Sophie Calle. I believe this shoot went well but the were some negatives about it. The shoots went really well because I had the objects available to do the white food shoot but I didn't have the objects available to do other coloured food shoots. Therefore it was difficult for me to do other shoots. In addition to, I thought that if I was to do it again I would not do the same work as Sophie Calle, but my own idea that still relates to her work.

The fourth and fifth shoot was based around The Colour Wheel, which shows: primary, secondary and tertiary colours on a circular wheel, showing what colours are opposite sand similar.. This is because I wanted to do a few shoots that were focusing on contrasting primary and secondary colours against each other or two of the same. For my fourth shoot I used a yellow banana and a red apple. Both these colours are primary which worked well. This gave a strong contrast between the two colours, especially when I edited the background black so the fruits stood out even more. For my fifth shoot I used a green pepper with a handful of small red tomatoes. Red being primary, green being complimentary and being opposite on The Colour Wheel meant these were a good pair to work with. The pepper being green really makes it bold and stand out against these tomatoes that its surrounded by. With the editing I did whiten the background and increase the saturation of the pepper to make it bolder.

Overall, I believe I fulfilled my intentions as I clearly done many shoots showing the relationship between colour and food. Also, showing how a certain colour can make that food be strongly conveyed against others. In my work you can see my influences as some are generally trying to recreate their work and others are different but staying with the same idea of the influence. With my research I did sustain it and thought carefully when picking my influences as I wanted them to all relate with each other, which they did. My experiments have been clearly documented on my blog and in my portfolio with the contact sheets and explanation of why and how I done the shoot.

5TH SHOOT - INFLUENCED BY THE COLOUR WHEEL

Initial shots

My third influence for my idea of showing the relationship between colour and food is The Colour Wheel. I chose this as my third influence because The Colour Wheel shows the primary, secondary and tertiary colours. Therefore I could use this to put different colours that are opposite to each other on The colour Wheel together. For this shoot I used a green pepper and a handful of red tomatoes as they're complimentary colours so it would be good to see how they both look when contrasted together.

For this shoot I used a green pepper and a handful of red tomatoes on top a sheet of white A4 paper for my background as the white background brings out the colours and creates a bigger contrast. I used my Nikon d3200 and 18-55mm lens. I shot from a birds eye view as that was the best way to put the vegetables in front of a white background and take the shots. In addition to, I used flash during the shoot as well because that was the best source of lighting due to it lighting the red and green objects to create a better contrast.

Some images didn't turn out too well and how I wanted them to be. For example, image 1 and 5. Image 1 didn't turn out too good because the white background isn't covering the whole of the image and the lighting is too dark as the camera is too far away. image 5 was bad as well because the focus is poor, leaving the image out of focus and blurred. However, some images did turn out well. For example, image 4 and 16. this is because the focus is perfect, making the image sharp and not blurred like some of the other images. In addition to, the lighting is perfect as it lightens the red and green and leaves a clean shine on the vegetables.

BEST EDIT

The picture above is my best edit from this shoot. I chose this picture for my best edit due to the good focusing on the vegetables swell as the lighting which shows a slight shine and reflection which makes the image slightly sharper and cleaner looking. For the editing of this picture I used the quick selection tool. Firstly I selected each vegetable and increased the saturation to enhance the colours. Also, I selected the background and increased the exposure to its maximum so that the background is as white as possible.

4TH SHOOT - INFLUENCED BY THE COLOUR WHEEL

Initial shots

My third influence for my idea of showing the relationship between colour and food is The Colour Wheel. I chose this as my third influence because The Colour Wheel shows the primary, secondary and tertiary colours. Therefore I could use this to put different colours that are opposite to each other on The colour Wheel together. For this shoot I used a banana and apple as yellow and red are opposite so I experimented to see how it would look.

For this shoot I used a yellow banana and red apple on a white surface with a brick as a background which I may edit and create a black background. I used my Nikon d3200 and 18-55mm lens. I shot from a metre away from my subject as I found that was the best place for the focus and the overall position of the image. For this shoot I used flash because this would brighten the image, especially the fruits. This would create a greater contrast between the two objects.

Some images didn't turn out too well and how I wanted them to be. For example, image 1 and 9 didn't turn out too good. Image 1 was bad due to  the shadow at the bottom of the image which removes part of the white surface that needs to be covering. Then with image 9, the problem is with the angle of the image. This angle is too low and therefore cuts part of the fruits out of the image. However, some images did turn out well. For example, image 7 and 14. These images are the best from this shoot for many reasons. Firstly the lighting is perfect as the shadows are correct and the lighting of the objects is good as they're not too dark and the colours are obvious.

BEST EDIT

The picture above is my best edit from this shoot. I chose this picture for best edit mainly due to the focusing of the fruits. In addition to, the fruits are well positioned and contrast well together. For the editing of this image I used the quick selection tool and brush tool. Firstly, I quick selected each fruit, one at a time. When doing this I increased the saturation and tuning slightly to brighten the image and colours. Also, this would help with selecting the background next. I used the quick selection tool for the background and decreased the exposure to its maximum to completely black out the background. This is so the image looks neater and more fouled on the main objects. Also, I used the brush tool to trim round the fruits so the border lines were tidy and so the image doesn't  look badly edited.

Relationship With Colours - 3rd Artist Research - Colour Wheel

Colour Wheel

The colour Wheel is an abstract illustrative organization of colour hues around a circle that shows relationships between primary colourssecondary colours and tertiary colours. The arrangement of colors around the colour circle is often considered to be in correspondence with the wavelengths of light, as opposed to hues, in accord with the original color circle of Isaac Newton

Two of the oldest colour wheels which were created by a man called Boutet in 1708. To the left is the 7 - colour circle and to the right is the 12 - colour circle.

COLOR TERMINOLOGY
primary colors
Primary Colors: Colors at their basic essence; those colors that cannot be created by mixing others.

secondary colors
Secondary Colors: Those colors achieved by a mixture of two primaries.

tertiary colors
Tertiary Colors: Those colors achieved by a mixture of primary and secondary hues.

complementary colors - red and green
Complementary Colors: Those colors located opposite each other on a color wheel.

analogous colors
Analogous Colors: Those colors located close together on a color wheel.

3RD SHOOT - INFLUENCED BY SOPHIE CALLE

Initial shots

My second influence for my idea of showing the relationship between colour and food is Sophie Calle. I chose her as my second influence due to her unique project called 'The Chromatic Diet'. For six days Calle consumed a diet of a single food colour. Her creativity and imagination in this piece sparks a powerful and attractive reputation as well as giving the audience the pleasure of the real. For this shoot I attempted the white food shoot or the Wednesday shoot.

For my second shoot I used: rice, chicken, milk, vanilla ice cream, white chocolate and white cutlery. I used my Nikon d3200 and 18-55mm lens. I shot from a birds eye view angle, as does Sophie Calle with her work. This angle helps with the lighting but is rather difficult to get the shadows out of the image from the objects and myself. For this shoot I experimented with flash as I did with my first two shoots. This was to work with the the colour white to brighten the image because without flash the image was darkened significantly.

Some images didn't turn out too well and how I wanted them to be. For example, image 4 and 15 didn't turn out too good. With image 4 the problem is with positioning of the subjects and the lighting. The positioning of the subjects is wrong because the white sheet (background) is not semetrical as well as it not filling the whole image. Also, the lighting is wrong because half of the image is light and the other is dark. Image 15's problem is just the lighting due to the image being too dark and not showing a strong white colour. However, some images did turn out well. For example, image 9 and 10. These images are the best from this shoot because all of the objects are positioned perfectly and the same as Sophie Calle with her shoot. In addition to, the lighting is perfect as their are no shadow anomalies and the objects are well lightened.

Shoot 3 - Best Edit

BEST EDIT

The picture above is my best edit from this shoot. I picked this picture to edit for many reasons. Firstly, the birds eye view angle is perfectly positioned above the subject. Therefore, nothing is wrongly positioned and the shadows are kept to a minimum. In addition to, the lighting is good as I used flash and this brightened the image so that the image is brighter and whiter. For this edit I used different editing techniques. Firstly, I de-saturated the whole image to whiten the image. Next, I used the quick selection tool and slightly whitened foods such as the vanilla ice cream and white chocolate in the top right side. This was due to the yellowish tint which was showing and so I removed this by whitening and tuning it. (Edited on Adobe Photoshop).

Relationship With Colours - 2nd Artist Research - Sophie Calle

Sophie Calle

Sophie Calle (born 1953) is a French writerphotographerinstallation artist, and conceptual artistHer work frequently depicts human vulnerability, and examines identity and intimacy. She is recognised for her detective-like ability to follow strangers and investigate their private lives. Her photographic work often includes panels of text of her own writing. The work that caught my eye is her project called 'The Chromatic Diet'. The images feature a variety of food and drinks for everyday of the week but just in one colour for each day. This work inspired me due to the unique and creative thought that is shown in the pictures, as well as the unique and originality of the images.

With my shoots I am planning on doing the same as Sophie Calle with her food colouring work with a new colour for two days of the week. For the 1st shoot Im planning on doing a shoot with white food with foods such as rice and eggs. Then with my 2nd shoot I am planning on doing a shoot with green food such as Spinach and cucumber.

2ND SHOOT - INFLUENCED BY SARAH GRAHAM

Initial shots
My first influence for my idea of showing the relationship between colour and food is Sarah Graham. I chose her for my first influence due to her colourful photorealism creations of toys and sweets which are meant to show joy and happiness which I have tied to show in my work. For this shoot I tried to recreate her piece art which is called 'Top Of The Pops'. For this shoot I used Chupa Chups lollies as they're colourful and would works well with my idea of showing the relationship between different colours.

For my second shoot I gathered five Chupa Chups lollies and placed them in a small cup so that the lollies are closer together, therefore showing a better difference between the colours. I used my Nikon d3200 and 18-55mm lens. I shot from a higher angle as the lighting was better on my subjects and so i could fit more of the colours into the image. During my shoot I experimented using flash which worked well because it brightened the image and increased the saturation of the sweets so the image wasn't so boring and therefore it would be more joyful which Sarah Graham tries to show.

Some images didn't turn out too well and how I wanted them to be. For example, image 1 and 18 didn't turn out too good. With image 1 the problem is the focus on the lollies isn't correct. This has caused the lollies too be blurred which isn't ideal. Image 18's problem was with the lighting. The image is clearly too dark and is rather dull, therefore not showing much colour. However some images did turn out well. For example, image 12 and 15. These Images are good because the lighting is correct, thus illuminating the and increasing the saturation of the lollies which also occurs on image 15. In addition to, the focus is correct and so the images aren't blurred. Lastly, the lollies are positioned perfectly as well as the camera angle, showing these colours.

BEST EDIT

The picture above is my best edit from this shoot. I picked this picture to edit due to the well angled shot as it fits the Chupa Chups into the image as well as the good lighting and focus which show off those colours a lot more. This edit was similar to the one from the 1st shoot as I used the quick selection tool again. Firstly, I blurred the background again so that all the focus was on the lollipops in the centre of the image. Then I selected the lollipops and increased the saturation and you can see how the colours are brightened and the image is a lot happier. (Edited on Adobe Photoshop).
